About the Item

A Large Chased Silver Passover Seder Plate made by Gutgesell Gebrüder in Hanau, circa 1915, is a very noteworthy piece of Judaica. Most seder plates were made with a cast and mass-produced, this plate was hand chased by silversmiths and their work is reflected in the realistic depictions of the flowers, fruit, and people embellished on the rim of the seder plate. The silversmiths Gutgesell Gebrüder were known for producing high-quality silver items, their Judaica pieces are often sought after for their craftsmanship. Made during a period of significant historical events, including World War I and the aftermath of the dissolution of the German Empire. Jewish communities in Hanau and across Europe were navigating cultural, social, and political changes. Seder plate is decorated with intricate biblical designs on the outer rim of the plate displaying chased scenes of the binding of Issac at the top and an event from the Tanaic ages documented in the Haggadah below. Stylized cartouches of four of the 'Ushpizin' are interspersed among the beautiful floral, foliate, and fruit motifs adorning the outer rim of the plate. On the top inner section of the plate, the word 'Kadesh' the first custom performed during Seder on Passover eve is gorgeously encircled by a floral wreath tied off with flowing ribbons at both ends. Below are the rest of the customs performed during the seder prominently written in neat rows. At the bottom, various biblical verses of praise and prosperity are similarly written. This exquisite Passover Seder Plate from Gutgesell Gebrüder serves as both a religious artifact and a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the time, encapsulating the significance of Passover and its enduring symbolism. Hallmarked at the bottom edge of the crimped rim
