Mappin English Sterling Silver 1898 Child's / Christening Mug with House & Mouse
About the Item
Mappin, sterling silver child's or christening mug or cup, beautifully adorned with acid-etched motifs depicting a house and a mouse, made in London in 1898. It measures 3 1/8'' in height by 2 1/4'' in diameter at the top, weighs 5.4 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
The firm started when Jonathan Mappin opened his workshop in 1775 in Sheffield with a view to creating outstanding British silverware. The company continued to expand and pass through successive generations of Mappin silversmiths. In the mid nineteenth century, under the management of Jonathan Mappin’s four great grandsons, the business was incorporated as Mappin Brothers Ltd and experienced a significant period of expansion. In 1851 the production was transferred to the new Queens Plate & Cutlery Works, and the company participated with its full production to the London Great Exhibition and showrooms were opened in London.
In 1890 the business was sold to Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. In 1902 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co sold Mappin Brother to J.N. Mappin who merged the two companies under the name Mappin & Webb (Mappin Bros incorporated). In 1963, Mappin & Webb merged with Elkington and Walker & Hall to form British Silverware Ltd.
Prestigious museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, have Mappin & Webb pieces in their permanent collection.
