Mappin & Webb "Albany" 1895 Sterling Silver Set of 12 Fish Set 'Fork & Knife'

About the Item

Mr. Giallo is opening his personal vault to sell a collection of his treasured antiques he's held on for so long. ABOUT ITEM One of Vito's favorites! Mappin & Webb 1895 Sterling Silver Set of 12 Fish Set (Fork & Knife). Hallmarked M&W, Crown, Walking Lion, R, No Monogram - from Mappin & Webb, England, Sheffield. Vito's original stickers are on the back of some of the pieces. In his ownership, they were used for his rental business (post his shop "Vito Giallo Antiques" on Madison Avenue in New York). A very beautiful and special collection. Item originally bought by Vito at Sotheby's Auction, 1980s. Please contact if you'd love more details. MORE ON VITO Born and raised New York artist, Vito Giallo, turned one of the best antique dealers sold to the who’s who of New York City - think Elton John, Andre Leon Talley, Greta Garbo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Franz Kilne, Mark Rothko (to name a few) and of course a daily customer of his, Andy Warhol. Mr. Giallo worked as an illustrator and graphic artist at Wolgang Beck Studios in 1952, where he suggested to use Mr. Beck’s space to open The Loft Gallery. There was Andy Warhol’s first show, The Origamis, along with other commercial artists, Nathan Gluck, including Mr. Giallo. He was Warhol’s first apprentice and first to give Warhol a show in 1954. Vito’s passion for antiques and their stories lead him to leave commercial art and Warhol to later open a little shop on Madison Ave across the Carlyle Hotel that brought in every artist, actor, politician, doctor, writer in. A frequent buyer (we’re talking every two weeks) from Sotheby’s plus Giallo’s exquisite taste made him the go-to for the best antiques in the city! Mr. Giallo is 92yrs young and currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. At 91, Giallo is still very active. He was recently featured in NYT, W, Elle, and debuted his highly anticipated jewelry collaboration all in April 2022 with BK Jeweler, Catbird, and is currently working on launching his memoir/book! With the success of these recent projects, Giallo is opening his personal vault, to sell a collection of his treasured antiques he's held on for so long. He’s a very special New York treasure.

Lowell Nesbitt (American, 1933-1993) Flower, 1978 tempera on board 60 1/2 x 40 1/2 inches. Provenance: Sold: Christie's East, May 18, 1999, Lot 224 Blair Nesbitt is an American painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor. Although he worked in a variety of media and covered a wide range of subjects throughout his career, he is best known for his large, Photorealist botanical paintings. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1933, Nesbitt earned a degree from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Later, he also studied at London’s Royal Academy of Arts. Working in stained glass and etching and also producing abstract paintings in his early career, a 1962 encounter with artist Robert Indiana led him to steer his aesthetic toward realism. Though he held his first solo show at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1958, it was his 1964 debut at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. that would truly bring him to the attention of the art world. In this exhibit, his botanical series of paintings, drawings, and prints captivated the art world and public alike. The game-changing Corcoran Gallery show would send his career down the trajectory of sustained success. In 1976, Nesbitt moved from his New York City West 14th Street studio to a massive space located at 389 West 12th Street. The 12,500 square foot living and workspace supplied ample room for creating his enormous paintings...
