About the Item

This exquisite early 19th-century silver spice container, crafted in the Poland–Ukraine region around 1830, is a remarkable example of miniature Judaica infused with refined naturalism and delicate symbolism. The container rests upon a finely formed clover-shaped base, a subtle nod to organic motifs. At the center rises a small raised dome, topped by a silver ball that forms the foundation for the vertical composition. From this base emerges a realistically rendered stem, beautifully curved and adorned with naturalistic leaves that arc outward with lifelike grace, as though growing from the ground upward. Crowning the stem is a spherical spice compartment, its form both compact and expressive. The lower half of the sphere is adorned with chased foliate scrolls, evoking vines and flora in rhythmic, swirling patterns. The upper half, which opens at the equator to allow for the insertion of fragrant spices, is pierced with delicate holes interspersed among further leaf-like scrollwork, providing both ventilation and visual charm. This tasteful combination of function and form allows the aromatic spices to gently emanate through the container when in use during Havdalah or festive occasions. Atop the sphere sits a graceful flag finial, shaped in a classic swallowtail form, swaying slightly in silhouette and adding a whimsical, ceremonial touch to the piece. Though modest in scale, this miniature spice container reflects the elegance and artistic sensibility of 19th-century Eastern European Judaica. 1.06ozt
