About the Item

A Moroccan Silver Hamsa from around 1900 is a wonderful artifact with deep cultural and spiritual significance. The Hamsa, also known as the Hand of Miriam, is a popular symbol in North African and Middle Eastern cultures, and communities. The Hamsa is believed to ward off the evil eye and bring blessings, protection, and good fortune to its owner. It symbolizes strength, power, and blessings from a divine source. In Morocco, the Hamsa holds particular significance within the Jewish community, where it is often associated with blessings, prosperity, and protection. Moroccan artisans were renowned for their intricate metalwork, often incorporating traditional motifs and designs. shaped in the form of a hand with engraved foliage and floral motifs with a star of David at the center. Interestingly we see two suspension loops at the top and the bottom which seemingly means that this Hamsa was created as a part of a larger structure, probably a hanging lamp, and the hansa was a part of the upper hanging portion with a chain affixed to either side. This Silver Hamsa is directly linked to the rich cultural and religious tapestry of Morocco made during a period characterized by cultural exchange and artistic flourishing under the rule of the Alaouite dynasty. It also highlights the enduring symbolism and craftsmanship that continue to resonate across different cultures and faiths today.
