About the Item

A Decorative North African Silver Torah Pointer made in Morocco in the Early 20th Century. Generally, antique Torah pointers have a specific scrolling or engraved design and certain repetitive patterns, this Moroccan Torah pointer is truly exquisite and has multiple different designs and techniques and is designed differently from most Torah pointers as well as pointers from that region. Seemingly the pointer has an ancient key shape with a large circle at its base chased with a six-branch menorah at the front and a Star of David at the back. A suspension ring and loop affixed at the end has a Hamza hand affixed to the loop with foliate scrolling chased on the fingers and a Star of David encircled by an engraved ringed border on the top of the hand. handle of the pointer is rectangular shaped with further foliate engraved scrolling on both sides and different shapes molded in its sides matching the designs at the top circle of each side. Interestingly enough the extended chased gloved hand the pointer is finished with, switches the harmonious patterns, and flips the designs from each other sides. The palm which is not usually styled is designed similarly to the top handles design with foliate scrolling and a Star of David, while the upper hand is chased with foliate scrolling similar to the scrolling found on the bottom of the handle. A similar Torah Pointer can be found in the William Gross Collection.

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Russian silver Torah pointer/yad; an addition to our Judaica silverware collection This exceptional antique 19th century Russian silver Torah pointer/yad has a knopped tapering cylindrical form. The bulbous knops are each plain and unembellished. The plain tapering handpiece is embellished with applied interlacing designs to the upper portion. The shaft of this silver Torah pointer has a stranded twist design, to an undulating circular collar style knop. This lower knop terminates with an impressive hand, with its index finger pointed. The hallmarks struck to the handpiece of this exceptional silver Torah pointer include: Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks*) City Mark: Moscow, Russia Maker's mark: ФВ (untraced) Such original Russian examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate; due to their formation they do not stand the test of time. * 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver NOTE: The Hebrew word yad (יד) translates to "hand" and is used while reading the Torah. The yad ensures that an impure hand does not touch the fragile parchment; issues also arise when ink does not absorb to the velum and there can be damage to the wording. Condition This antique yad...

19th Century Dutch Silver Pipe Stopper with Ship
Located in Delft, NL
A 19th century Dutch silver pipe stopper with ship. A ship on a plateau on the stem. The stem is openwork and twisted. The pipe cleaner was originally a simple instrument only intended to empty the pipe bowl. 19th Century and Dutch hallmarked with the "Sword" used from 1814-1906. The silversmith mark is faded The size of the pipe cleaner is 10,5 cm high, 2 cm wide and the depth is 0,7 cm ( 4.1 Inch x 0.8 Inch x 0.3 Inch) The weight is 14 grams The silver version of the pipe cleaner, consisting of a pen topped by a figure, has no relation to the luxurious multi-piece garnish or the clipping tube. It originated from the simple brass or copper predecessor or the more popular variant of wood, bone or in a rare case also ivory. It is a consumable with only one purpose: to remove the tobacco plug at the bottom of the pipe bowl and to clean the kettle. The point is the working part of the object, the decorative element functions as a handle. In addition to the pipe stopper intended for pressing the smoldering tobacco, the rooting tool is an indispensable tool for the smoker to empty the pipe bowl after smoking. Strangely enough, there is little relationship between the pipe stopper on the one hand and the pipe rooter on the other. It is especially remarkable that the silver rooters...
