An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique Victorian English sterling silver beer/water/cordial jug; part of our dining silverware collection This exceptional antique English antique Victorian sterling silver water jug has a circular round from to a circular domed foot. The body of this impressive jug is embellished with impressive chased leaf decoration, alternating with curvilinear bud style festoons and tiered organic motifs. The upper rim of the jug is encompassed with an applied moulded border, continuing to the bear style spout. This impressive example of antique silverware is fitted with an opposing scroll handle ornamented with an impressive leaf decorated thumbpiece. The underside of the jug bears the retailer's mark 'Mappin & Webb, London'. This impressive jug was crafted by the renowned London silversmith John Newton Mappin of Mappin & Webb, and is a large example for its type. Condition This antique silver water jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The piece has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full British hallmarks struck to the surface of the jug are all very clear. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jug, made by George Fox; an addition to our diverse wine and drinks related collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a bulbous rounded knopped form onto a circular domed foot. The swept neck and body of the jug are embellished with chased decorated scrolling strapwork bordered panels incorporating fruit and foliate designs on a matte background, intersected by bead motifs accented with trellis ornamentation. The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with chased decorated stylized leaf designs to the lower portion and spiraling stylized bird designs accented with rosette motifs to the main portion. The decoration to the main portion of the body incorporates a large vacant oval cartouche to either side. Each incurved portion of the knops are ornamented with a stylized egg decorated border and floral motifs. The flared rim to the lip of the jug is embellished with a broad band of applied ribbed decoration. This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional cast S scroll handle with a figural ornamentation to the upper portion and a tapering rope twist design to the lower portion. The lower socket features a bifurcating scrolling design with stylized leaf terminals whilst the upper curved bifurcating socket is embellished with chased leaf designs. The opposing interior side of the lip, below the upper terminal to the handle, is ornamented with a chased decorated grotesque mask. The foot is embellished with embossed decoration depicting flowing water incorporating conical shells and dolphin designs. This antique tantalus set is unsigned, but presumed to have originated from England and date to approximately 1900 and done in the period Edwardian style. The case is composed of oak with silver or nickel plated mounts. The squared bottles are composed of crystal with faceted ball stoppers and etched flowers on foliage on the sides.
