About the Item

Pair of English Sterling Silver Shell-Form Tea Caddy Spoons with Shell Feet, Francis Howard, Sheffield, 1893, 47 grams A charming and sculptural pair of late Victorian English sterling silver tea caddy spoons, crafted in Sheffield in 1893 by renowned silversmiths Francis Howard. Known for their refined domestic silverware, Francis Howard produced elegant and imaginative designs, and this pair is no exception. Each spoon is modeled in the form of a scallop shell bowl, deeply fluted and finely detailed, resting on two raised conical shell-form feet—a whimsical and highly unusual feature that elevates them from functional objects to decorative art. The extended handle is flat and elegantly shaped, bordered with a hand-punched oval dot motif that frames the surface with rhythmic precision. The underside is clearly hallmarked with: Lion passant: Sterling silver (.925) Crown: Sheffield Assay Office Date letter "A": 1893 Maker's mark "FH": Francis Howard “Made in England”: A mark used on exported goods post-1892. Substantial in feel and beautifully executed, these spoons weigh 47 grams combined and are ideal for collectors of English silver, tea antiques, or figural design. The combination of organic shell motifs and neoclassical detailing reflects the Victorian fascination with nature and ornament. Dimensions: Approx. 2.5in. long x 1.75 in. wide x .25 in. high Condition: Excellent antique condition with gentle patina.
