Pair of Dutch Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Platters with Cattails by Ph Saakes
About the Item
An incredibly heavy pair of period Art Nouveau Dutch sterling silver round serving trays from a large service by Ph. Saakes of the Hague.
These pieces are likely from a commissioned service. Saakes was a Dutch gold and silversmith in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He often worked for the royalty of Europe. His son, Th. Saakes, eventually took over and expanded the business in the early 20th century.
The design of these platters (and this service in general) plays on a theme of water. The rim and integral handles mimic the undulating movement of water. The sides are further decorated with three dimensional cattails.
The base is marked with a Dutch assay for the Hague, a silver standard of 0.934 or higher, the maker Ph. Saakes, and a date mark of 1911. It also bears the mark for the retailer Th. H. Saakes.
