A Pair of Italian Silver Candlesticks, Rome Circa 1720

About the Item

An elegant and refined pair of early 18th-century silver candlesticks, crafted in Rome circa 1720, showcasing the Baroque sensibility and masterful metalwork characteristic of Roman silversmiths of the period. Each candlestick is boldly cast with a sculptural baluster-form shaft, finely articulated with alternating lobed and fluted sections, rising from a dramatic circular base. The bases are distinguished by deeply chased, radiating flutes that converge in a rhythmic flow toward the stem, each channel culminating in raised rounded bosses—creating a rich interplay of light and shadow. The base's undulating repoussé pattern evokes naturalistic forms, echoing the stylized ornamentation popular in Roman ecclesiastical silverwork. Balanced in proportion and imbued with graceful movement, these candlesticks reflect both ceremonial dignity and artistic sophistication. Whether intended for synagogue, church, or aristocratic domestic use, their sculptural quality and silver brilliance remain timeless. Hallmarked at the base of each candlestick. Weight 410 grams
