About the Item

A refined pair of sterling silver overlay salt cellars, each of circular form with deep cobalt blue glass bodies permanently fused with intricately designed sterling silver overlay. The cellars rest on three applied silver feet, giving them a graceful and balanced stance. The sterling silver decoration, applied directly to the glass surface, features elegant floral and scroll motifs typical of early 20th-century American silver overlay design. The process involved electro-depositing pure silver onto specially prepared glass areas, followed by hand finishing and polishing to reveal a shimmering, high-contrast design against the luminous cobalt background. Each piece is signed “Lenox” (indicating the glassmaker) and bears the Redlich Silver Co. hallmark, identifying the renowned New York silversmith responsible for the overlay. This dual signature represents a noteworthy collaboration between Lenox Incorporated of Trenton, New Jersey and Redlich & Co. of New York, a partnership celebrated for its luxurious tablewares combining fine glass and precious metal artistry.
