Pair of Victorian Style Sterling Silver Candlesticks

About the Item
Pair of Victorian style, sterling silver candlesticks, Birmingham, England, Broadway and Company, year-hallmarked for 1977 for Queen Elizabeth II 's Jubilee. Designed with birds, swirls, etc. Each candlestick measures 4 inches high x 3 1/2 inches diameter. Underside of each is covered in green felt (which has some minor staining (see photos) commensurate with age and use). Weighted. Dark spots on silver in photos are reflections. In excellent vintage condition.

The bodies are crafted in the New Brandenstein relief pattern designed by Johann Friedrich Eberlein in 1744, which gives this service a distinct Rococo feel. The hand-painted enamel detailing is known as the Flowers and Insects motif and is executed with stunning vibrancy and intricacy. Since each piece is executed entirely by hand, no two pieces bear the exact same adornments.
Similar, single dining pieces are featured in Meissen Domestic Porcelain by Günther Sterba, 1991, figures 83 through 86.
The pieces bear the Meissen blue crossed swords that date this service between 1850/60-1924.

These magnificent antique Georgian English sterling silver candlesticks have a plain subtly tapering columnar form. The large and impressive Corinthian capital of each candlestick retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconce ornamented with a plain moulded rim. The cylindrical columns are supported by a cuboid plinth to an impressive plain square stepped three tier base. Each plinth is embellished with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms depicting the Head family coat of arms encircled with a belt accented with the family motto 'Study Quiet'. The bases retain the original contemporary engraved inscription 'A token of respect from Francis Head to her aunt Dame Mary Ann Head. 1803' to the lowest tier. Both candlesticks are fitted with turned mahogany bases to the underside. These magnificent Georgian candlesticks were crafted by George Eadon, George Kibbles & John Weaver of George Eadon & Co. The title ‘Dame’ was the traditional style for the wife of a baronet at this time and before although it was interchangeable with the title ‘Lady’.
