Paul Storr English Sterling Silver Covered Soup Tureen On Stand, London 1823

About the Item

A museum quality George IV English Sterling Silver Covered Soup Tureen on Stand by Paul Storr, London, Circa 1823 Lid engraved with 'Lion Rampant' herald; also repeated to the shoulder of the body with motto Nil Desperandum (Never Despair). Interior of lid stamped with maker, and worn reign, date and standard marks; also stamped on underside of stand and shoulder of wall with maker, standard, town, date and reign marks. This silver soup tureen, complete with matching cover, was crafted by arguably one of the most important Georgian silversmith Paul Storr. It is a striking example of the neoclassical style that pervaded late Georgian design and that Storr helped to define. Each element of the tureen is flawlessly executed and balanced. Beginning his silversmithing career at an early age, Paul Storr apprenticed with Swedish-born smith Andrew Fogleberg at only 14. He entered his first mark in 1792, and went on to join the famed firm of Rundell, Bridge and Rundell in 1806 — the same year they obtained the Royal Warrant. His innovative decorative motifs and meticulous finishes earned him the patronage of some of the most powerful figures of the period, including King George III. Paul Storr's legacy is a remarkable body of work with far-reaching influences, and this tureen is a testament to this silversmith's tremendous skill.
