Rare American Coin Silver Mustard Pot & Spoon Lows, Ball & Company, Boston, 1847

About the Item

Rare American Coin Silver Mustard Pot & Spoon by Lows, Ball & Company, Boston, Dated 1847, 139 Grams A richly decorated and historically inscribed American coin silver mustard pot with matching spoon, crafted by Lows, Ball & Company of Boston and presented in 1847. This finely executed piece exemplifies the refined taste and high craftsmanship of mid-19th-century Boston silversmiths working in the early American classical tradition. The cylindrical form is adorned with intricate repoussé floral decoration, including fully blossomed cabbage roses and naturalistic leaves that wrap around the body with sculptural depth and softness. The domed, hinged lid continues the floral theme with a raised bouquet of roses surrounded by a finely chased anthemion border, a stylized honeysuckle motif rooted in ancient Greek architecture, commonly used in neoclassical design to convey elegance and order. A beautifully formed scallop shell thumbpiece sits atop the lid—a classical emblem that offers both tactile function and symbolic beauty. Framed by engraved rococo-style scrollwork, the front bears a personal inscription: “Susan C. Lawrence / from R.L. / July 16th, 1847”—suggesting the pot was given as a commemorative or sentimental gift. The level of detail in the engraving and cartouche speaks to the bespoke nature of this piece. The accompanying original spoon features a twisted handle, scallop-shell bowl, and an engraved fiddleback terminal with a delicate foliate border and monogram. The set is marked: LOWS, BALL & COMPANY / PURE SILVER COIN / BOSTON, active in the 1840s–1850s and known for producing fine silver in the pre-Gorham era. Dimensions: Mustard pot: 3" diameter x 2.75" high x 4" wide (including handle) Spoon: 3.5" long x 0.75" wide A rare and lyrical survival of early American domestic silver—combining beauty, sentiment, and function in a piece equally suited to collectors of coin silver, classical revival design, and early Boston silversmithing.

Emilia Castillo Sterling Silver & Volcanic Stone Molcajete with Spoon, Mexico, Later 20th Century A sterling silver and volcanic stone molcajete (mortar) set is a functional sculptural object that bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury.
