Samuel Wastell Antique Georgian Britannia Standard Silver Mug

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English Britannia standard silver mug, an addition to our collectable early 18th century silverware collection. This exceptional antique George I Britannia silver mug has a cylindrical form onto a circular spreading foot. The surface of this antique George I silver mug is embellished with a contemporary engraved scrolling leaf bordered lozenge shaped cartouche displaying a coat of arms. The upper rim of the body is encircled with a band of tooled decoration. The mug is fitted with an impressive S-scroll handle incorporating a plain scrolling thumb piece ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'M.P'. The underside of the mug bears the contemporary engraved initials 'I.P', these engraved initials are of the period. Britannia silver: The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). Condition This antique George I silver mug is an exceptional gauge of silver and exceptional quality for its type. The piece is in exceptional condition in keeping with age. There are some natural fire marks to the mug in keeping with age. Full Britannia standard hallmarks struck to the surface of the mug are clear in keeping with age and location, the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
