Shreve & Co. sterling silver pitcher with an adjustable handle in Mid-Century Modern, geometrically-inclined, curvilinear design with two applied bands throughout the body and an applied loop at the back. It measures 10 3/4'' in height with the lifted handle (6'' without) by 7'' in width by 6'' in depth, weighs 18.1 ozt, and bears hallmarks as shown. Shreve & Company is an established retailer of jewelry, from timepieces to diamonds, headquartered in San Francisco, California. Incorporated in 1894 by George Rodman and Albert J. Lewis, it is considered the oldest commercial establishment in San Francisco. The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society has the silver spade used by San Francisco Mayor James Rolphe at the groundbreaking for city hall and the civic center, and other objects made by Shreve & Co.
