About the Item

A magnificent Siddur (Jewish prayer book) housed in an exquisite Italian silver binding, created in the early decades of the 20th century — a sublime marriage of spiritual devotion and refined craftsmanship. The binding, executed in cast, repoussé, stamped, and pierced silver, bears the fineness mark “800” (used from the late 19th century until 1933), together with a spurious Venetian mark resembling the Lion of Saint Mark — a hallmark of the region’s decorative silverwork. Every detail of this binding testifies to the artistic excellence of Italy’s silversmiths during the height of Jewish ceremonial artistry. Both covers are richly ornamented with vegetal motifs arranged in a delicate lattice pattern, symbolizing life and divine abundance. At each corner, clusters of grapes emerge in sculptural repoussé — a timeless emblem of joy, blessing, and spiritual fruitfulness. At the center of the front cover, a finely detailed cartouche bears the Levi family coat of arms: a hand pouring water from a jug into a basin, evoking the priestly tradition and purity of service. The back cover displays a central seven-branched Menorah, symbolizing enlightenment and sacred continuity. The spine, gracefully adorned with matching vegetal patterns and a Star of David, unites the design with understated harmony. A pair of original matching clasps secures the volume with dignity and grace. Within lies the “Tefillot Yisrael” prayer book, according to the Ashkenazi rite, printed in Hebrew and Italian by S. Belforte & C., Livorno, 1905 — the renowned publisher celebrated for its fine Judaic works. An object of profound beauty and heritage, this silver-bound Siddur stands as both a work of devotion and a work of art, encapsulating the spirit, lineage, and elegance of the Levi family and of early 20th-century Italian Judaica. [1], V, [1], 428, [1], 430-435 pages.
