About the Item

An elegant Austrian Hanukkah lamp made in the late 19th century. The Backplate of this Hanukkah lamp is designed similar to many Torah shields made in that province and that part of the 19th century. A gorgeous Torah crown with flaring leaf, clover, and beaded designs is majestically mounted atop a blank decalogue at the center flanked by laurel leaves sprouting from a bow. Top corners of the backplate are adorned with chased flower designs encircled with rope tassels to frame the backplates with chased flowing drapery designs. At bottom, a pair of fierce-looking, resting lions are wonderfully chased. Two auriform foliate side rails flank the eight oil containers resting on raised foliate scrolled holders applied to the rectangular base which rests on four seashell scrolled feet. Removable servant lamp is affixed to the upper left portion of the backplate. Hallmarked at front of the lower base and on the front sides of the backplate.
