About the Item

An elegant and refined silver Hanukkah lamp, crafted in Germany circa 1930. The lamp embodies the clean, balanced aesthetics of early 20th-century European silversmithing while firmly maintaining its ritual identity. This Hanukkah lamp is raised on a beautifully contoured circular domed fluted base, flaring upward into a smooth tapering stem that leads to a bold central shaft. The Shamash or servant lamp is carefully positioned at the heart of the lamp on a removable branch. The shaft branches out in an open, arched structure reminiscent of Gothic or Art Deco influence, forming eight symmetrical arms that hold the candleholders in a tiered, undulating pattern. Each candleholder is crafted in a rounded decanter form, with smooth, polished surfaces that reflect the craftsmanship of German silverwork of the time. At the center of the row, the Hanukkah lamp is crowned by a finely shaped Magen David (Star of David), slightly elevated above the row of oil jugs, a clear and proud emblem of Jewish identity. The overall composition of the lamp is both modernist and dignified, merging functional simplicity with traditional symbolism. The structure's harmony and restraint, combined with its gleaming silver finish, give this Hanukkah lamp a timeless appeal. Hallmarked at the side of the domed base. 15.1ozt

A Silver Hanukkah Lamp , Germany Circa 1930
Located in New York, NY
A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930. This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children. The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude. Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend. Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity. Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base.
