A Silver German Hanukkah Lamp by Gebrüder Gutgesell, Hanau Circa 1910

About the Item

A festive and wonderfully chased Silver German Hanukkah oil lamp by Gebrüder Gutgesellfrom made in Hanau circa 1910. The early 20th Century Germany was marked by cultural richness within the Jewish communities despite growing tensions leading up to World War I. Jewish artisans and craftsmen played a significant role in the artistic developments of the time. Given the era, the lamp exhibits many characteristics of the Art Nouveau style, with intricate, flowing designs inspired by natural forms. The Hanukkah lamp's backplate features a combination of stunning chased designs on the backplate giving it visual appeal, depth, and texture. A lit seven-branch menorah, beautifully designed, rests in a window framed with draped curtains, flanked by two large acanthus leaves sprouting from its base. Two intricately designed lions facing outward are applied to the sides of the backplate. Beautiful laurel wreaths adorn the top of the backplate with a large protuberant crown with floral-styled arches and two acorn finials. A rounded bench-shaped base holds a row of eight applied oil jug containers each made with a wick cap fitted to their mouths. A servant lamp hangs on the side of the backplate similarly designed with an auriform-styled handle. the backrest presents lovely lily-scrolling rows with detailed foliate scrolling at the front edge. The supporting legs at the front are fashioned into floral chased columns with acorn finials and fluted legs below with two similar acorn-shaped legs at the back The lion is a common symbol in Jewish art, representing the tribe of Judah, strength, and majesty. The menorah chased into the backplate signifies the eternal light and the miracle of Hanukkah. Beyond monetary worth, this lamp holds cultural and historical importance, making it highly valued among collectors of Judaica and antique silver. The intricate craftsmanship and historical significance of the piece influence its desirability. Marked at the front of the rounded bench base 19.5ozt.

A Silver Hanukkah Lamp , Germany Circa 1930
Located in New York, NY
A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930. This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children. The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude. Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend. Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity. Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base.
