About the Item
A Silver Hamsa from early 20th-century Morocco is a captivating artifact that blends Jewish symbolism with North African craftsmanship.
The Hamsa, a hand-shaped amulet believed to ward off the evil eye and bring blessings, holds significant cultural and religious meaning in Jewish and broader Middle Eastern traditions.
During the early 1900s, Morocco was home to a diverse Jewish community known for its rich artistic traditions. The craftsmanship of Moroccan Jewish silversmiths during this period reflected both local Berber and Arab influences, as well as distinct Jewish symbols and motifs.
This silver Hamsa from this era features detailed engraving and embossing, incorporating floral designs typical of Moroccan artistry. Each element carries layers of cultural significance, serving both decorative and spiritual purposes within Jewish households and serving as a protection for mothers and newborns.
At the center of the Hamsa is a convex, vertically-oriented eye shape in relief – marked 1333 [1915 CE] – surmounted by a suspension ring. Flanking this boss is a pair of sheathed daggers, intended to scare away the female demon Lilith and offer protection from the Evil Eye. The surface is decorated in floral and foliate patterns.
Such artifacts offer a glimpse into the religious practices, artistic sensibilities, and intercultural exchanges that characterized Jewish life in Morocco during the early 20th century. This Silver Hamsa, in particular, stands as a testament to the enduring symbolism and craftsmanship that continues to resonate within Jewish communities worldwide.
