About the Item
A silver acid-etched Kiddush goblet by Avishai, made in Israel around 1950, is a significant piece of Judaica with both artistic and cultural value.
Avishai is a known Israeli silversmith whose works are characterized by meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design. This Kiddush Goblet is made in a Bezalel School style and designed by Avishai with acid-etched designs and typical Bezalel iconography. The 1950s were formative years for the newly established State of Israel, with a burgeoning arts and crafts movement that sought to blend traditional Jewish themes with modern artistic techniques.
The goblet is set on a round stepped dome base adorned with intricate filigree scrolling and a cylindrical stem. the conical Lilly-shaped bowl is decorated with foliate and palm tree acid-etched patterns and harmonious undulating scrolling at the banded lip and the base. Three floral-shaped medallions are embellished on the sides of the bowl with beautiful floral scrolling and beaded patterns.
Judaica items from the early years of the Israeli state, especially those by recognized artisans like Avishai, are highly valued for their historical context and artistic merit. The use of acid etching adds a unique artistic touch, showcasing the innovative techniques adopted by Israeli craftsmen during this period.
Marked at center underneath the domed base.
