A Silver North African Hanukkah Lamp, Circa 1900

About the Item

This Very Rare Silver North African Hanukkah lamp from circa 1900 is a highly notable piece of Judaica, made of silver and displaying exquisite craftsmanship, indicating it was a valuable and likely commissioned piece, showcasing the wealth and status of the owner. Jewish communities in countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya had a long and rich history, often influenced by the broader cultural and artistic trends of their regions. North African Jewish artisans were known for their exceptional metalwork. Many became part of the Bezalel School of Arts after they emigrated to Israel and continued to produce highly detailed and artistically significant pieces. Most lamps made in this region have a distinctive style and feature unique pierced design elements, detailed engravings, and ornate motifs. Hanukkah lamp is made of Silver fairly uncommon for lamps made in this region and features a gorgeous pierced backplate engraved with beautiful floral and foliate motifs, and petal-shaped edges. The side panels swing open and shut securely with two hooks at the bottom and are similarly styled with pierced foliate patterns and a Star of David. A row of eight square oil containers and a servant lamp with tapering pinched wick spouts are applied to the backplate hanging over the pinched rectangular drip pan below. A suspension loop and ring are affixed to the top of the backplate for hanging purposes. This Hanukkah lamp provides insight into the artistic expressions of the Jewish community in North Africa at the turn of the 20th century. It is a tangible link to the cultural and artistic heritage of North African Jews, representing their unique blend of Jewish and regional influences. 17.23ozt

A Silver Hanukkah Lamp , Germany Circa 1930
Located in New York, NY
A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930. This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children. The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude. Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend. Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity. Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base.
