A Silver and Stone Jerusalem Seal Circa 1900's
About the Item
This exquisite and highly unusual Judaica object is a rotating Jerusalem seal, crafted circa the early 1900s, combining fine silverwork with a richly hued ruby-colored stone. Ingeniously designed, the central seal stone is mounted on a rotating axis, allowing the user to select one of three intricately engraved sides—each bearing a distinct sacred motif related to the Holy City of Jerusalem.
Each facet of the stone features deeply engraved depictions of revered Jerusalem sites, capturing their spiritual significance in miniature relief:
The first panel displays the iconic skyline of the Old City above the Western Wall (Kotel), with the Hebrew inscriptions “ירושלים” (Jerusalem) above and “כותל מערבי” (Western Wall) below, reverently highlighting the city's eternal heart.
The second panel presents another sacred vista of Jerusalem and is inscribed at the base with “ציון” (Zion), evoking the enduring hope and identity bound to Mount Zion throughout Jewish history.
The third panel depicts a mountainous landscape punctuated by mausoleums, a tower, and trees, representing the revered Mount of Olives—engraved with “הר הזיתים” (Har HaZeitim), Jerusalem’s ancient burial site of prophets, sages, and generations of pilgrims.
Each end of the stone is secured with a silver-cast half-ring clasp, connected by a chain, which allows the seal to rotate smoothly. The chosen panel could then be pressed into wax or soft material for sealing—serving both a ritualistic and practical purpose.
A remarkable fusion of devotional symbolism and functional artistry, this seal is an exceptional example of early 20th-century Judaica that bridges personal identity, sacred geography, and ritual practice into a singular, beautifully crafted object.
