About the Item

A stunning silver traveling holiday compendium by Moshe Smilovitz from Tel Aviv circa 1950 is a unique and significant piece of Judaica. Moshe Smilovitz is recognized for his contributions to Judaica, known for high-quality craftsmanship and innovative designs. He was most famous for his practices of combining different pieces of earlier Judaica to create a uniquely designed object that had practical uses as well as aesthetic beauty. In the 1950s with the newly established State of Israel, a flourishing arts and crafts movement that sought to blend traditional Jewish themes with modern artistic techniques blossomed. Tel Aviv was a burgeoning center for culture and innovation during this period. The compendium includes a detachable Kiddush cup, spice box, candle holders, and a Hannukah lamp, all housed in one object designed for travel ensuring that individuals can observe holidays and Shabbat. Compendium rests on four paw feet applied to a square stepped base with chased with foliate patterns and eight small pierced holes that serve as the Hannukah lamp. Affixed to the base is a Solomonic column decorated with multicolored stone gems that fit perfectly into the base of the detectable kiddush goblet and serve as the candlestick holder. The Kiddush Goblet is baluster-formed and is gorgeously surrounded with chased leaves and gadroon-styled designs and similarly adorned with multicolored stone gems. Resting atop the goblet is a harmonious tri-tiered spice tower with crown crenelations and foliate pierced windows. A removable spire with an acorn finial rests gracefully atop the tower and is similarly styled and decorated. Judaica items from the early years of the Israeli state, especially those by known artisans like Smilovitz, are rare and highly valued by collectors. The compendium’s historical context and the quality of the craftsmanship add to its significance. Hallmarked in different areas, hallmarks do not coincide with the origin or the date created. 16.09ozt.
