A Very Fine 18th Century Georgian Onslow Pattern Sterling Silver Serving Spoon

About the Item

A very fine & elegant 18th century George III sterling silver serving spoon in the Onslow pattern. Showing a fluted oval bowl with a feathered edge, rising to a slender stem terminating to a fluted fan-shaped handle & scrolled ‘Onslow’ terminal. The underside bearing impressed London hallmarks with date letter for 1776 and rubbed makers marks (quite likely those of Robert Ross), the underside of the handle engraved with a monogram. Measuring 10.5” long x 2” wide (across the bowl) x 1" high (from the heel of the bowl to the tip). Weight, 103 grams. Robert Ross is recorded as having registered his mark in 1774 and is recognized as having been a highly regarded spoon specialist. The Onslow pattern was purportedly named in honour of noted 18th century British Speaker of the House, Arthur Onslow (1691- 1768).
