About the Item
On the large side and very well made with much attention to detail, this late 19th century toothpick holder portrays a working man atop a penny farthing bicycle with a barrel strapped across his back (holds the toothpicks) mounted on a diamond repeat pattern base. Note the fine detail to the rope link, the spokes, facial features and clothing folds, simulating a realistic scene to this unique figural silver plated toothpick holder. In addition to hygene, toothpicks would have been used as cocktail skewers for olives, fruit bits, or small hors d' oeuvres. Could have also been used for wooden matches to light candles.
Markings and etching on the underneath indicate it was made by "James W. Tufts" Boston, Warranted Quadruple Plate Item#2649 with 2613". It is in all original condition with the preponderance of silver plate intact and a lovely patina to the original surface. There have been no alterations or repairs of any kind. Simply a wonderful gift item for the collector of silver and silver plated figural and novelty items from the Victorian era.
