Collection of 19th century bird-shaped silver gilt rosewater sprinkles Continental, 19th Century Largest: Height 11.5cm, width 15.5cm, depth 6.5cm Smallest: Height 10.5cm, width 27cm, depth 6cm Crafted in the late 19th century, this collection consists of three bird-shaped rosewater sprinkles. Traditionally, pieces like these were used in Iran during the festival of Ab Pashan in memory of rainfall which would end the ongoing famine. This custom later spread to India where due to its cooling and refreshing properties, rosewater was sprinkled on guests. All models are of a similar design but of various sizes. Their bulbous bodies are entirely covered with engraved feathers as well as other cast anatomical features such as eyes and beaks. The prominent tails are very eye-catching and add to the real-life appearance of the models. Each model’s head lifts off to reveal a pierced opening from which rosewater can be sprinkled. One of the models is missing the pierced cover. A ‘K’ marking can be found on the birds. Of an unusual and charming design, this collection is a very desirable addition to one’s interior.
