Faceted Flashed Cranberry Kings Crown Etched Tableware Set of 16 by Tiffin

About

Set of 16 flashed cranberry ruby red Kings Crown dessert plates and glasses from Tiffin-Franciscan Glass. This elegant traditional tableware set includes (8) goblets and (8) dessert plates. Plates are round and transparent with clear glass centers and flashed red or cranberry pink circular banded outer edges. The center of the plates features cut stars on the underside at the base which can be seen through the top. The stars are 12 point rayed stars with a slightly raised middle die mark meant to imitate a ground off pontil mark. Thumbprint design around the center stars adds to the intricate elegance. The size is perfect for either snacks or desserts. Or even as a complement to a larger table setting if used as a bread plate. Goblets are also flashed cranberry in color at the top, and clear from mid-body to bottom. Faceted from every side, the design features a plain red color top over a ring of deep thumbprints decorated above and below with a raised zig-zag border. The glassware's pattern, King's Crown, originally was named Excelsior when it was introduced by the Adams Glass Co. during the late 1800s. Initially produced in clear crystal glass. The Kings Crown pattern was produced by both The Indiana Glass Company as well as Tiffin Glass and was originally called Excelsior. The pattern gained popularity in the late 1800s due to its’ clean lines and at the time deep ruby staining of the top portion of the piece. The glass, as is today, was quite heavy and thick in order to accommodate the very deep thumbprints on the lower portion of the body of the pieces. Tiffin goblets or wine glasses have a slightly flared top rim whereas those from Indiana Glass are straight. (See Photo 2) Because similar patterns are made by both the Indiana Glass Company as well as Tiffin, one must look at a few things in order to tell the difference and figure out the maker. The Kings Crown or Thumbprint pattern from Tiffin-Franciscan Glass has elongated thumbprints which follow the Adams Glass Company, and are more oval in shape. The thumbprints of the Indiana Glass Company are rounded in shape. Tiffin used a flashed glass method to add color, and staining was applied to the clear glass, as opposed to a solid piece of ruby red glass. Additionally, Indiana Glass Company pieces have 2 mold marks at the bottom, whereas the Kings Crown from Tiffin has three. (See photo 9 for reference.) How We Would Style Them: Perfect for a party of any kind. This bright set of plates and goblets will add a dramatic pop of color to any place setting. Dimensions: Dessert Plate: 7.5" diameter .75" tall 0.8 lbs Goblet: 3.25" diameter 5.5" tall 1 lb.
