About the Item
Hallmarked in London in 2001, this large sterling silver claret jug was made by C. J. Vander, one of the last great English silversmithing firms to carry on traditional handcrafted techniques into the 21st century.
The form is generous and sculptural, easily accommodating two bottles of wine. Cast and applied silver vine and grape motifs wind around the neck, handle, and foot, creating a dramatic silhouette. The frosted glass body is wheel-cut with foliate ornament, echoing the vine decoration in a more restrained register. The sweeping spout and twisting handle give the piece a sense of movement and weight, underscoring its purpose as a centerpiece for the table.
Measuring 15.75 inches tall, this is a substantial and decorative object, equally suited to use or display. C. J. Vander was known for high-quality, classically inspired silver, and this late example demonstrates the firm’s enduring attention to detail and proportion.
