About the Item

"Japon" service, produced in 1876 by the Creil & Montereau pottery, shows the great success of Japonism in tableware production, like the Bracquemond-Rousseau service, produced by the same factory a few years earlier. The Japon service was very renowned and much appreciated. It is characterized by fine earthenware with a slightly bluish paste on which a darker blue decoration is printed. The decoration shows cherry trees, plum trees, and chrysanthemum flower barriers in the perfect spirit of Japonism protection. The service is often called "Service Monet" because the artist had a similar one in his home in Giverny. Composition of the service (107 pieces) : - 36 dinner plates (diam. 23 cm), 4 of which "as is" - 30 table or dessert plates (diam 22/21,5 cm) of which 1 is "as is" - 12 soup plates diam 23 cm - 4 ramekins L 23 cm - 1 soup tureen diam 28,5 cm x 13 H cm - 2 vegetable dishes W 25 cm x H 9 cm, 1 as is - 2 salad bowls diam 28 cm as is - 1 round deep dish diam 26,5 cm - 2 round dishes diam 28 cm - 2 round dishes diam 31 cm - 2 round dishes diam 36,5 cm - 1 oval dish L 37 cm x 26 cm - 1 oval dish L 42 cm x 29 cm - 1 gravy boat on a tray - 1 covered gravy boat - 4 mounted plates diam 22,5 cm x 4 cm H - 2 high hollow fruit and cake bowls diam 24 cm x H 10 cm - 1 high compotier diam 28 cm x H 11 cm - 1 rare and very cute oval mustard pot on a dish with its lid Unless otherwise stated, the pieces in this set are in the best possible condition and have the fewest visible defects for antique pieces. The mention "as is" for 5 pieces of this service refers to slight damage(s) visible on the piece: a crack or small lack. The damage is mainly aesthetic but the object does not show any structural damage likely to alter its use.
