About the Item

A pewter taper sided tankard from the Royal George Pub, Chatham. Pint size. Mark of a rearing horse in a shield, #6. Mid-19th century. Charles Dickens' country home Gad's Hill Place, was near Chatham and his happiest youthful days were in Chatham, where his father worked 1817-1822. According to the owner, who's grandmother, a resident of Chatham, found this tankard, "everyone knew" that Dickens' favorite pub was the the Royal George and all the ladies around town in the 1920s-30s who collected antiques considered it a real coup if they could get a period tankard from the Dickens era from the Royal George. Well used condition. 4 1/2" h., 5 1/2" over handle, 3 3/4" dia. base.
