About the Item

Oillets Art Deco dish created on July 7, 1932. Pressed molded glass with green patina. Signed Lalique France circa 1950. In perfect condition. Model No. 422 from the Félix Marcillac Catalogue Raisonné. Diameter: 35.4 cm Height: 6.5 cm Weight: 2.5 kg René Lalique Born in 1860 in Aÿ, Champagne, René Lalique emerged as one of the greatest jewelers and master glassmakers of his time. He marked the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with his unique and instantly recognizable style. René Lalique began an apprenticeship in 1876 with the jeweler Aucoc. After attending the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and spending two years in England, he set up as a studio designer, supplying leading jewelers such as Jacta, Boucheron, Cartier, and Gariod. In 1885, he took over the workshop of jeweler Jules Destapes and fully launched his career as a jeweler. Woman, fauna, flora... The "3Fs" sum up René Lalique's main sources of inspiration. The artist had a profound admiration for the female body. He also drew much inspiration from nature, which he observed so much as a child during stays in Champagne with his maternal grandparents. René Lalique's avant-garde jewelry appealed to an intellectual elite. Among his most famous clients were actress Sarah Bernhardt and oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1900, René Lalique achieved unparalleled success at the Paris World's Fair. It was the peak of his jewelry career. But success also meant attempts at imitation, which didn't please René Lalique. Glass had already attracted René Lalique. In 1907, he met perfumer François Coty. From then on, he created bottles for specific fragrances for him and many other perfumers: the container now had a direct symbolic link to the contents. In 1913, René Lalique purchased the Combs-la-Ville glassworks, where he expanded the mass production of his works to limit costs and make his creations accessible to as many people as possible. In 1921, René Lalique decided to build a new factory in Wingen-sur-Moder. He chose the Northern Vosges because he knew he could find skilled glassmakers there and benefited from financial incentives from the French government following the First World War. "La Verrerie d'Alsace" specialized particularly in tableware. Numerous sets were developed and marketed worldwide. ECLECTIC DESIGNER René Lalique then distinguished himself in various decorative fields. His contribution to the 1925 Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, notably with the fountain "Les Sources de France," demonstrated his architectural expertise. He is also remembered for the radiator caps he created for cars in the 1920s. An exceptional artist and astute industrialist, René Lalique knew how to live fully in his time to develop his business. He died on May 1, 1945, leaving behind an artistic legacy and a name that remain famous to this day.
