About the Item

Set of 6 Silver and Tortoise Place Card Holders in the Original Box. They were retailed by Ryrie Jewelers. The holders are sterling silver and tortoise. The tortoise is framed in a sterling leaf border and inlaid with sterling silver medallions. Each are hallmarked by E.S. Barnsley & Co Ltd., Birmingham, and dated 1912/13. Ryrie's first location was opened at 113 Yonge Street, a small store on the east side of Yonge Street with a frontage of only 12 feet. These premises had been known as a jewelry store since 1854, but had more recently belonged to Segworth & Co., watchmaker and jeweler. James Ryrie had apprenticed with Segworth & Co., and had managed the store before taking over as owner in 1879. In 1904 the firm merged with Birks and in 1924 changed its name to Ryrie, Birks Limited. The silver is hallmarked by E.S. Barnsley & Co. Ltd. They were a silversmith company located in Birmingham, England and were active from 1895 to 1921. They were known for producing the highest-quality silver. Trent Antiques has been a respected name in antiques for over 35 years with a large collection of period furniture, art, books, jewelry and decorative accessories.

Geo III Wedgwood and Steel Mounted Amboyna and Ebony Writing Box, c1800
By Matthew Boulton
Located in valatie, NY
The hinged rectangular top with three oval Signed Wedgwood plaques depicting putti at various pursuits within oval paterae mounted swagged and beaded borders, opening to a morocco leather lined hinged slope enclosing a well, the upper section fitted with candlesticks and compartmentalized for inkwells, above a hinged lid the front with a spring loaded secret drawer opening to a needle or pincushion and spools of thread. This unusual work box, mounted with blue and white jasperware signed Wedgwood plaques, is English in conception. The writing box was a popular form first used in the 18th c and well into the 19th c for traveling. This type of portable desk was described by the English poet William Cowper in 1785 as 'the most elegant, the compactest, the most commodious desk in the world.' Additionally, the jasperware plaques, came from Josiah Wedgwood's factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Its proximity to the steel manufacturing city of Birmingham, the birthplace of Matthew Boulton, producer of decorative metalwork (including cut steel mounts) and described by his friend and fellow-industrialist, Josiah Wedgwood, as 'the first Manufacturer in England', certainly suggests an English origin and possibly his handwork. However, the polished steel mounts are also typical of furniture and objects made in Tula, Russia, where the Imperial Arms Factory was founded by Peter the Great in the early 18th c and which later became known for its decorative objects, including furniture and domestic pieces. Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, ordered the 'Frog Service...

A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune. This tradition has travelled through Europe and is an adopted practice in many countries. Condition These impressive antique menu holders...
