Big Dripper Coffee Set by Michael Graves for Swid Powell, 1987 USA

About the Item

The now famous "Big Dripper" by Michael Graves. A humorous name for a grand creation: a 14 cups coffee maker with creamer, sugar and spoon. A design landmark, at the intersection of two great schools of thought: the European Radical Design and the American Post-modernism; The New International Style! Michael Graves made a "coup de maître" with this architectural coffee maker, overcoming his precedent huge success with the whistling tea kettle for Alessi. It was a time when Michael Graves was considered one of the most important living architects. The Big Dripper is a complete drip coffee maker set designed in 1987 by Michael Graves, the great icon of American post-modern design and architecture. It is the perfect companion for the coffee conscious person. It is found in many American and European museums collections. This complete set contains a lidded coffee pot with drip spout, a lidded sugar bowl with spoon and a creamer. Spheres standing on cross bases in maroon, and decorated with green wavy lines and dots. Made in porcelain and manufactured from 1989 to 1990 by Swid Powell. Enameled and gilt porcelain.

A remarkably delicate and clever design. The glass blue bird serves as an aerator for the wine. The cross shaped acacia wood foot reminds of the Swid Powell coffee set. A stylistic signature that makes a pleasing come back with this decanter. Other recurring figure across Michael Graves' career, the blue glass bird...
