It was popular in the United States and Europe roughly between 1945 and 1969. The term was defined as a design movement by Cara Greenberg in her 1984 book Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s and is now officially recognized by scholars and museums as a significant movement in design. Generally, the movement is characterized by clean and simple lines with the honest use of materials and it generally does not include decorative embellishments.
