A Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Tureen, Cover and Stand
About the Item
Arms of Lynch with Wake in pretence quartering Hovell Lynch,
Qianlong Period,
Circa 1755
The famille rose tureen, cover and stand has a lobed form and is decorated with butterflies, fruit and cockerels. The tureen bears the arms of Lynch of Staple in Kent amidst floral sprays, butterflies and birds, the tureen with rabbit head handles, the conforming lid with unusual pomegranate knob.
Length of undertray 14 3/4 inches (37.5 cm).
The Lynch family of Staple in Kent are descended from William Lynch a rich wool merchant and major benefactor of Cranbrooke School in the 16th century. A relative John Lynch founded Lynchburg, Virginia in 1786 and his brother Charles led a band of determined patriots against lawless Tories, coining the term "Lynch Law".

Howard writes, "The arms are of Lynch granted in 1572 to Lynch of Staple in Kent, Sable three lynches proper with the crest A Lynx passant proper. In pretence is Wake, Or two bars gules (correctly also in chief three torteaux) quartering Hovell, Sable a crescent or.
The Very Revd. John Lynch, D.D. Dean of Canterbury, was descended from William Lynch of Staple and his wife Judith, daughter of John Aylmer, Bishop pf London who died in 1594. He married Mary, daughter and heiress of the Most Revd. William Wake, D.D. Archbishop of Canterbury, descended from an ancient family in Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Northamptonshire."
