About the Item

Continental Pottery Large Soup Tureen, Cover & stand, Nimy Factory, Belgium, Early 19th century. The large, striking circular tureen, cover and stand are painted in underglaze blue with floral designs in the Chinese style. On the tureen body to the front and back is a large chinoiserie type grouping of flowers and plants growing out of rockwork with a large bug hovering nearby. Below the handles leaves and flowers are placed in a grouping together. That type of design is then found around the rim of the cove and the wide rim of the stand. The molded handles are i the form of a large scroll to each side while the cover has molded pine cones alternating with oak leaves below the button finial in the form of a flower head with the center in blue. The outer rim of the cover and the stand have a narrow band of blue with stylized flower heads between a wavy blue line. The stand is circular with a raised center and with a lip around the edge to hold the tureen in place. Between this and the rim is a deep well. Mark: To the underside of the stand is an impressed "NIM." for the Nimy factory and "4/" and a "D". Dimensions: 14 3/4 inches high x 14 7/8 inches high; stand alone: Diameter 14 7/8 inches x 1 1/2 inches high; Tureen alone: 13 1/2 inches high x 16 inches wide x 12 inches deep. Reference: The Nimy Museum of Ceramics and Potteries, Mons and Its-Region has a display on their website with two large dishes with the same decoration.
