About the Item

A large cauldron-shaped French faience tureen raised on scrolling tri-form feet, with twin handles and domed lid decorated with hand-painted sprays of roses and borders of vitruvian scrolls. This tureen was made in France in the late 19th century and is in excellent original condition. Perfect for holiday entertaining! Faience was created in France in the 16th century using a tin glaze over an earthenware body. Faience and its European counterparts, delft and maiolica, were created in an effort to reproduce the aesthetics of Chinese porcelains in the West. The tin glaze created a pure white surface on which painters could produce highly ornate scenes with blue and/or polychrome enamels. Dimensions: 11 3/4 in. H x 12 1/4 in. W x 9 1/2 in.
