About the Item

A magnificent pair of Antique Georgian Silver Soup Tureens as part of an important service for the Earl of Lonsdale. Each oval Lidded Silver Tureen is embellished with a chased swag and bow design with a bow mirrored on the stands. The Lid of each tureen has an impressive cupid figure riding a lion as a finial. Each Tureen features a pair of applied Rams Head handles and each tureen is further decorated with elegant engraved patterning and chased bands. The Lid, Body and Stands all have engraved crests. The Tureens each have a removable silver liner. The Tureens can be used both with and without the stands at the occasion suites. The Soup Tureens were made in London in 1777 by Parker & Wakelin Total Weight - 11,764g / 378.26oz Total Height on stand - 38.3cm Height Tureen Only - 29.3cm Length Stand - 42.7cm Width Stand - 31.3cm Each piece has a full English Hallmark. Pair of Paul Storr, English, sterling silver tureens or covered vegetable dishes, beautifully adorned with gadrooned rims, natural motifs, and a noble crest, from 1809 (George III era). They measure 14'' from handle to handle (10 1/2'' excluding the handles) by 11 1/2'' in height (height of the stands are 4 3/4''). Total silver weight is 93 troy ounces; the stands and the liners are original Sheffield plate. Hallmarks are shown. Paul Storr (1770-1844) is considered the greatest English silversmith of the Regency era, and his beautifully ornate silver reflected the rapidly changing world in which he lived. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical style developed in the Regency period.
