About the Item
Whimsical yet elegant, this rare matched pair of pear-shaped covered tureens was crafted in Russia circa 1870 by the renowned Riga Kuznetsov Porcelain Factory. Expertly hand-painted, each tureen features a soft yellow and pale green ground with a warm rosy blush on either side, beautifully imitating the look of ripened fruit. The sculptural lids are topped with a naturalistic branch-form handle and a miniature pear finial, all accented with delicate gilt highlights. Each tureen rests on an integrated shaped base, painted in vibrant green with fine veining to enhance its naturalistic appeal. The interiors are fully glazed in white, allowing them to serve as both functional dishes and decorative display pieces. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, the vessels cheerful palette and playful form would make a captivating centerpiece for a dining table, sideboard, or vitrine display.
Bearing the underglaze blue Kuznetsov Riga factory mark to the underside, this pair represents a fine and collectible example of 19th-century Russian porcelain. The Kuznetsov porcelain works, founded in 1810 by Matvey Kuznetsov, grew to become the largest porcelain manufacturer in Imperial Russia by the late 19th century, supplying both the aristocracy and the royal court. The Riga branch was celebrated for its colorful and finely modeled wares, often blending European styles with traditional Russian motifs.
