Ancient Greek Gold Stater Coin of King Philip III of Macedon, 323 BC

About

A gold stater issued in the name of King Philip III of Macedon. Struck at the Babylon mint, 323 - 317 BC. The obverse with the head of Athena, wearing a single drop earring and Corinthian helmet decorated with a charging griffin below an elaborate horsehair crest. The reverse shows the winged goddess of victory, nike, holding a laurel wreath pinched between her finger and thumb and a stylis (cross arm of a ship's mast) in her left hand. The inscription reading: ??S???OS F?????OY "Of King Philip" Wheel, monogram and A in fields. Weight: 8.55 g Diameter: 18.30 mm Extremely fine, underlying luster, scuff at edge on obverse. Provenance: J. Malter, auction 85, 19th June 2004, lot 18.
