Ancient Greek Silver Octopus Coin from Syracuse, 460 BC

About

A silver litra from Syracuse, dating to 460-450 BC. The obverse with an archaic style head of Arethusa, her hair tied into a bunch and bound with a pearl diadem. The reverse with an octopus, its tentacles twisting and curling around its body. The abbreviated inscription gives the city name: S??? "Syracuse" Weight: 0.90 g Measure: Diameter 11.70 mm Provenance: Lanz Graz, Auction 5, 1st December 1975, lot 92. From the collection of Professor Hans-Gert Bachmann, with old inventory card.
