Early 19th Century Ebony and Ivory Dominoes Set in Box

About the Item

Just imagine if these dominoes could share the many stories they've heard around the table from various players over the centuries. This unique oak box with a small lock plate and modified back hinge is filled with 25 hand-crafted domino tiles made of ebony and ivory and finished with a raised brass pin. From the details of the box, it appears this set was well loved over the many years since their creation. The maker's markings found on the surface of each domino make each one truly a work of art. It is said that the brass pins were placed in each tile to protect table surfaces and make spinning each piece easier. From the primitive craftsmanship, these were most likely created in the earlier part of the 19th century. This set would make a beautiful arrangement on a table in a game room or study or on a themed shelf. Dimensions- Box: 4.75"w x 2.63"d x 3.25h" Dominoes: .63" x 1.38"
