Early 19th Century Needle Work Sampler by Ann Gould

$1,495

About

A young girl's hand-done sampler, of silk thread on linen ground. It is decorated in floral, meandering borders surrounding an open background, with various floating bird and animal figures amongst trees and flowering plants. Placed at the center/bottom are two, twin female figures, each holding birds (falcons?). They stand on either side of an architectural folly with a checkered floor or base. It is inscribed in stitched letters with the following verse and dates: "Tell me ye knowing and discerning Few...Where I may find a Friend both firm and true...Who dares stand by me when in deep distress...And then his Love and Friendship most express. Ann Gould, her work, Aged 10, 1804, Born Jan the 24, 1793." Framed in a distressed wood frame with a gold leafed liner, under glass.
