Characterized by a dynamic sense of movement, the Baroque, which has its center of diffusion in Rome, especially with Gian Lorenzo Bernini, invents entirely new and original forms even in the field of furniture and furnishings. It could be said that Baroque furniture becomes more a work of sculpture than of cabinetmaking: for example, concave and convex surfaces curve the legs of tables, developing into elaborate scrollwork. Recurring in the structures are the motifs of crossbeams, columns, broken-line or diamond-pointed panels, with a great wealth of naturalistic carvings, distinguished, depending on the areas of production, by S- or C-shaped scrolls, comb shells, candelabra, bambocci, ribbons, tendrils, pomegranates, masks, herms, trophies, tritons, and sea horses.
