Renaissance period, 16th century
Rare bronze statuette representing a naked young man with a dolphin. He is shown standing on the cetacean, the latter on a circular base, the right foot resting on the pectoral fin, the left foot resting on the head. The right arm stuck against the body, hand on the chest, the left hand enclosing the tail of the animal.
The term Renaissance is the French equivalent of the Italian rinascimento, or rinascita: the revival of European arts, which originated in the fifteenth century in Italy, where it was associated with the rediscovery of literature, philosophy and sciences of antiquity as well as the evolution of empirical methods used for the study of these disciplines.
