About the Item
Large bronze Buddha head
Ancient Kingdom of Siam
Ayutthaya School
16th - 17th century
The very soft face is set in an oval and is characterized by fine curvilinear brow ridges with perfect curvature meeting at the base of the an aquiline nose with dilated nostrils. Heavy, almost closed eyelids resting on almond-shaped eyes encrusted with mother-of-pearl, give the gaze an almost palpable attitude of deep interiority. The mouth with thick lips and pronounced corners is imprinted with a slight smile indicating the detachment of the Blessed One for the material contingencies of this world.
The hair, formerly lacquered and golden, is delimited by a fine border and is made up of a multitude of small spikes, the top of the skull receiving the ushnisha (today lacunar). The long stylized pointed ears, characteristic of the Ayutthaya School, are adorned with lobes distended by the weight of the ornaments that the Blessed One used to wear, thus symbolizing the royal origin of the Buddha.
The city of Ayutthaya was founded around 1350 by Prince Ramadhipati, the latter quickly becoming the capital of a powerful state, the newly constituted kingdom then encompassed most of the territories constituting Siam. Heir to previous empires, Ayutthaya developed an eclectic art of great variety and liveliness mixing Khmer and Sukhothai influences.
