Antique American Dapple Jumper Track Carousel Horse, Charles W Dare Attributed

About the Item

An antique American track machine carousel horse attributed to legendary carver Charles W. Dare Company, now mounted as a rocking horse. Hand-crafted in the early 20th century, circa 1920, born during the Golden Age of carousels in America (circa 1860-1930), exceptionally executed hand carved design with rich detailing, and warm polychrome painted white and gray dapple, featuring inset glass eyes, natural horsehair tail, saddle with carved cantle, blue painted saddle blanket and bridle, rising on a later blue and red painted wooden rocker base Stand, marked with letter "D" underneath in grey paint, most likely indicative of Dare, metal mounting plate marked AA PAT APLD FOR Carved in a galloping or jumper position, this whimsical yet Primitive country-fair style equine exhibits all the hallmarks of Dare’s design, such as the forward-facing ears, the perfectly combed asymmetrical mane with a wind-blown effect, the tail made of realistic hair, and the distinctive “bird” saddle, which was carved separately and attached. Among carousel antiques, those created by Dare are some the oldest and most coveted among collectors. They are the benchmark by which later carvings are measured. They are very seldom seen outside of museums and private collections, and to find one of such rustically elegant beauty, in such wonderful condition, is truly extraordinary. Considered a Pioneer in carousel horse carving, Charles W. Dare was the founder of Country Fair-style carousels and was one of the earliest makers of amusement equipment in America. Dare is credited with designing and popularizing the County fair style of carousel: simple, plain, sturdy, light weight and easily portable and storable. The carousels were manufactured for travelling the countryside to County fairs, carnivals and special events. Dare also built one of the first Ferris wheels, called a Dare wheel, in the country, and is believed to have introduced the fantastical sea horse, or hippocampus, into the carousel menagerie. Originally a hobbyhorse manufacturer, Dare founded the New York Carousel Company, and produced his first portable carousels between 1867 and 1875, with horses displaying the same simplicity as his hobbyhorses. In 1890, Dare renamed his prosperous business the Charles W. Dare Company, and produced a variety of amusement devices and portable carousels populated with an array of menagerie animals, including camels, elephants, deer and donkeys. Dare figures are renowned for maintaining a distinctive folk charm even as other carver’s created more realistic designs. An antique American railroad yard switch sign on custom stand. A wonderful example of both Americana and industrial folk art! Born in the US in the early 20th century, the large, double sided, painted red iron circular disc shaped "target" sign; mounted to painted black cast iron central pedestal standard; surmounted by hand hammered and chiseled raw iron three inch tall finial; rising from a later five spoke pentagonal black iron base, elaborately shaped, fan form with niche curved flowing lines. The central standard can unscrew from the base for easy transportation and storage. Versatile, use it indoors as a decorative accent and quick way to add color, rustic texture, dimension, and interest, or use outdoors to brighten up your space as a garden ornament or statue. Original condition but we mildly sealed it to preserve the beautiful, warm rustic patina that enhances it so much. Now stable, it won't make a mess or deteriorate, while retaining the unique character and charm that can only be aquired from decades of use, being weathered, naturally distressed, with old chippy paint, that's elegantly aged, rich deep red color It is a full size, authentic railroad iron target...
