About the Item

“Show us what you got, big shot!” shouted out the shooting gallery broker, half in shadow under the swaying string of lights. Louder now: “Step right up, ladies and gentlemen!” and “A winner every time! Who’s next?” combining time-worn showmanship and tried and true sales tactics to lure in passing customers. But it was this painted cast-iron eagle that took a beating for all that effort. Likely coming out of a Chicago company such as F.C. Mueller, H.C. Evans, Emil Hoffmann, or A.J. Smith, the target would have arrived at the carnival unpainted, as it appears on the rear but minus the rust, ready to be painted (and repainted) in the buyer’s chosen colors. For one's youthful memories, for conjuring up a time in history, such targets are now regarded as folk art. Those not scrapped over the decades as carnivals closed have ended up in museums and private collections.

Chicken Shooting Target, 1960s USA
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Very interesting heavy metal shooting target. Figure of a small chicken is attached to a metal post with a hollow tube at the top which a cable would run through suspending this target in the air. Figure is on a hinge so when you hit the target, the figure tilts back and "dings" when it returns to the vertical position. Used with bullet markings and slight divots. Great patina and super unique object. Matching slightly larger metal chicken...
